Winter Tree Maintenance

Trees work hard for us all year long. Return the favor by taking care of them even in the depths of winter.

  • Check trees for problems like decay, cankers, cracks and dead branches. Prune or remove hazardous trees.
  • Wrap thin-barked or young trees to protect them from winter temperature gradients and snow pile-up.
  • Check occasionally for signs of rodent damage. Use bait, enclosures or repellants as necessary.
  • Prune trees. Train young shade trees to have a single trunk with strong, well spaced branches. Remove branches that are dead, diseased, broken, cracked or rubbing on other branches.
  • For more tips, go to TreeHelp.com and MNSTAC's Maintenance Calendar.
