Learning with Trees
Featured School - Mississippi Elementary

Less than a mile from the Mississippi River, in a quiet residential Coon Rapids neighborhood, is Mississippi Elementary. This spring, staff and students are very excited to be renovating their under-used nature area—a project that started last year when Mississippi Elementary developed a small butterfly garden as a part of their Learning With Trees School Program. Plans are underway to add several shade and fruit trees, an evergreen planting, a meandering trail that will be accessible to all students, a classroom seating area, and various bird houses and stepping stones decorated by the students—all during one big Learning With Trees Planting Day!
Mississippi Elementary is one of several schools sponsored by Connexus Energy. One way Connexus gets kids excited about Planting Day is to sponsor a poster contest with great prizes to the winners. Connexus also donates other take home items for everyone involved in this fun outdoor event.
There are many helpers that are contributing to the success of this project. Thanks goes to the Anoka Hennepin School district grounds people (for removing an uninviting fence), the City of Coon Rapids, Tree Trust's Young Adult Conservation Corps (for constructing the trail), and of course, all the teachers and parents that will be involved in the event and future maintenance of the area.
